Abstract This chapter examines the role of Alfred the Great, king of the West-Saxons, in the forging of a national identity around the concept of a specifically “English” nation. It explains that Alfred's political rhetoric advanced the idea that all the Germanic people of England were one people, the angelcynn, or English nation. It also discusses how the Alfredan nation defined itself against outsiders through its common language, Christian religion, and shared history.
