Abstract

The Chinese media system is fundamentally different from the Western media system by definition because private ownership is prohibited by law. All news media in China are owned and operated by two parallel entities: the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the Chinese government. Further, each news media organization is stratified into four distinct levels that correspond to four levels of government: central administrative, provincial, prefectural-level city, and county governance.
