In recent years, social workers have paid increased attention to ethical issues in the profession. Unlike other allied professions, however, social work has not yet cultivated a cadre of ethics consultants to assist practitioners who encounter difficult ethical dilemmas. This article describes the development of ethics consultation in other professions and presents a framework for ethics consultation in social work. Particular attention is paid to the ethical issues on which social workers may find consultation useful; the various settings in which ethics consultation should be offered; possible roles for ethics consultants; and the skills required for competent consultation. A case illustration is included, along with recommendations to enhance the development of ethics consultation in social work.
