An important initial step in planning change initiatives is to examine the type of change under consideration. The type of change might be a short-range or long-range change, and the scope could be small, incremental changes or large, transformative changes. The Arenas of Action framework involves clearly defining the purpose of the desired change and the focus or the unit of change. Having a clear understanding of the reason for the change-oriented actions and the focus (individuals or conditions) will help a community group choose effective actions to create the conditions necessary to solve problems or promote the well-being of the people involved. The Arenas of Action technique also helps analyze a potential change while avoiding the problem of oversimplifying complex issues.
