Previews UNIVERSITIES are strongholds of fundamental research, and their influence on applied research is becoming stronger every year. Knowledge of what research is being done in the universities, therefore, is a key to the fields that are being developed, and to the directions that applied research may be taking five, 10, or 15 years hence. Much of the significant research that is conducted in universities is done by or with candidates for the Ph.D. The bulk of this work is usually published, but the lag between completion of the work and publication may amount to several years. About a year ago we inaugurated a program that we felt would offset one of the disadvantages of this publication lag.
