The brain's ability to regulate development and the fact that experience is of significance to its development are important arguments for adopting suitable measures for children with developmental disabilities. Interventions are likely to be effective, and research also suggests that it is important to start at an early age when possible. Intervention may differ with the presence of a sensitive or critical period. When brain plasticity is high, the aim is to promote problem solving that may stimulate the creation of new smaller and larger patterns of neural connections. There are a number of commercially available computerized training programs claiming to train the brain and improve general cognitive function, but these claims are controversial, and, although the performance on training tasks may improve, a transfer to everyday functioning mostly lacks empirical support.
