Abstract

As algorithmic deployments become more and more common, policymakers and advocates are increasingly turning to audits as an approach for accountability. Some audits have already led to product updates or recalls, organizational changes and developments to regulation or standards. However, difficulties in execution, oversight and impact threaten the credibility and effectiveness of these audits.
