The history of the Silk Roads commonly is conveyed with illustrations of selected “art objects” produced for elites. Special exhibitions and permanent museum collections offer a rich array of such material and have begun to make it available for teaching and learning via the Internet. However, there are still questions to be addressed about the definition of what should be included under the rubric of the Silk Roads (chronologically and geographically) and whether there has not been an excessive focus on the “well-known” objects, at the expense of incorporating more material that would illustrate the cultures of daily life. The chapter offers a selective overview of collections and exhibitions and addresses some of the challenges that can be addressed by harnessing modern technology to enhance access for an object-focused approach to learning about this subject.
