Abstract This chapter has two primary goals. First, we examine the field of language shift studies from the past to the present. We review previous approaches used in studying language maintenance and shift situations and, importantly, how those approaches have created foundations for new theories of shift. We then highlight the verticalization model of language shift. Verticalization is anchored in community structure, a focus of this chapter and book, along with how such structure connects down to social networks, families, and individuals. The theoretical section reviews key previous applications of the theory to shift situations and reviews how verticalization is developed in this volume.
