The article deals with the importance of performativity in the process of construction and constitution of social spaces. Performative spaces are not created by the activity of the material body, but the felt body. This point makes a difference to theoretical concepts which guides theory in human geography. In this man is conceptualized as a spiritual and physical being; the reality of a felt body does not occur. Also, there does not exist an emotional space, but space as an order of localized things. The discussion of the cultural understanding of performativity leads to a critical look at urban research. In this perspective the city appears as a performative space of something that happened. The example of “walking“ will demonstrate the difference between two very unequal paradigmatic schools: the sociology of practices (Michel de Certeau) and the phenomenology of space (Otto Friedrich Bollnow). The article ends with some ideas for further research on the importance of performativity and its significance for a deeper understanding of spatial processes and structures.
