I grew up in a large family home in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I was always a pretty good student, graduating at the top of my class in high school in 1948. I was eager to begin the next chapter of my academic life as I began in the College for Women at the University of Pennsylvania. Though there were a number of women in my undergraduate class, it always seemed to me that many of them were attending college in the hopes of finding an intelligent husband. On the other hand, while I saw no problem with their dreams of a white picket fence, I loved being enmeshed by the university environment and knew from early on that my future would involve pursuing further education, and hopefully that would lead to an exciting life that would advance the field of psychology.
