This chapter examines a case of archival displacement and disputes between the Autonomic Region of Madeira and the National Archives ‘Torre do Tombo’ in Portugal. This chapter presents details about a type of displaced archives in a subnational context, concerning to the madeiran archival fonds transferred to the ‘Torre do Tombo’ in the last quarter of the 19th century. After providing a brief contextualisation of the historical aspects of the Madeiran displaced fonds, we carried out a documentary analysis of sources of the following Portuguese institutions: National Archives of Portugal ‘Torre do Tombo’ and Regional Archives of Madeira. This chapter also provides a nissological perspective on critical displaced archives theory, considering that sub-national displaced archives remain as an under-researched subset of disputed archival claims.
