This chapter builds on the research and theories of young adult development and the emergent generation's attributes and mindsets that are presented in Chapter 11 . These generational characteristics include undergraduates’ growing need for agency and personalization in learning; new perceptions of the college experience and future careers; extreme periods of screen time and addiction to smartphones; declining in-person socialization and expressions of empathy; multitasking behavior, reduced attention span, and not feeling fully “present” in situations; and the prolonging of adolescence due, in part, to a heightened focus on personal safety and security. Following brief explanations of each theory and attribute, a comprehensive list of practical pedagogical strategies that specifically target each attribute for the holistic success of design students is offered. It is incumbent upon design educators to better understand how and why their students’ attributes are evolving. In doing so, they will be better prepared to craft dynamic learning environments through their teaching methods. The pedagogical techniques presented in this chapter serve as a starting point for educators in their continual exploration of innovative educational practices. These practices that support students also strengthen design curricula, programs, and institutions for our design students—and our world.
