This chapter provides an introduction to development of some of the commonest models that have formed the basis for policy efforts to change behaviour. These include aspects of economics, engineering, psychology, biology and religion/spirituality. The development of current views about ‘behaviour’ has come about through a specific course of history that has led to ‘individuals’ being seen as the main focus of attention. The models developed to understand behaviour as a result have tended to underplay the social context of behaviour, and through framing behaviour primarily as being about intention formation, they have tended to treat all behaviours as being similar as they do not emphasise changing external conditions.
