In recent years art therapist have begun to broaden the definitions of the profession, to include art-based actions contributing to local communities and society at large ( Hocoy, 2007 ; Kapitan, 2008 ; Talwar, 2016 ). In this chapter we reflect on the ideas of Portable Studio ( Kalmanowitz & Lloyd, 2005 ), an art therapy concept that outlines how art therapists can work outside of clinical settings. Examples from three local social action art therapy projects in Israel illustrate unique applications of the Portable Studio concept: two pop-up-open studios and a community-based visual journal. These examples form a basis from which to consider the role that art and art therapy have to offer in the context of social transformation.
