This paper investigates the presence or absence of linguistic human rights in Kurdistan straddling four nation-states: Iran, Iraq, Turkey, and Syria. It provides a critical analysis of these states' language policies, how they have evolved over the years, what orientations towards language diversity have motivated them, and what impacts they have had on the language and its speakers. The results are mapped out on a language orientation grid to show the extent to which these policies have contributed to the promotion or assimilation of a minoritized language in a very geopolitically important and complex part of the world.
