In this chapter the authors identify the ethical challenges facing humanity and argue that coaching needs a new paradigm to deal with them. As coaches, mentors and supervisors we do not sit separate from the ecological crises facing humanity. We live in a world in which all systems – social, economic and environmental – are so intimately connected that our actions as coaches contribute significantly to environmental outcomes. This chapter highlights the ethical imperative we bear to be good ancestors and hear the voice of future generations. This challenge calls into question many of the commonly held beliefs about coaching as they do not pay adequate attention to the complex interdependence that characterises our world. The authors suggest that coaching models need to reflect this complexity and provide a model and questions coaches can use to help them and their clients collaboratively unpack the uncomfortable ethical issues they face. Vignettes by other coaches show other approaches. The authors illustrate some early shoots of change in the coaching world and call for more research in these areas. Some implications of these ideas for coaching professional bodies, coach education and for the contracting of coaching services are raised.
