Crucial to the study of news sources are the relations between the media and the exercise of political and ideological power, especially, but not exclusively, by central social institutions that seek to define and manage the flow of information in contested fields of discourse. The media are analysed by Hall et al. in terms of a theory of ideological power underpinned by a Gramscian conception of the struggle for hegemony between dominant and subordinate classes in capitalist societies. Aside from seeing the media as excessively passive, the way of conceiving of their relations to news sources tends to elide the variations that exist within and between different news media. Access for ‘alternative’ viewpoints differs as between the press and television, and indeed, as between different newspapers.
