This chapter provides the ongoing process of professionalization and internationalization of electioneering and campaign practices in media-centered democracies. The advocates consider the Americanization of election communication to be the consequence of an ongoing structural change in politics, society and the media system. The focus is primarily on the micro-level of entrepreneurial actors, exporting their strategic know-how to foreign contexts by supply-or demand-driven consultancy activities, thus changing and modifying the campaign practice in the respective countries. The practice of political communication in the United States is regarded as “the cutting edge of electioneering innovation” by international experts. The adoption of American axioms of political election communication is characterized by the disregard for conventional organizational election campaigns and programmatic-ideological continuity. The shopping model primarily focuses on down-to-earth techniques that can easily be implemented in the national context while maintaining the country- and culture-specific campaign styles and philosophies.
