Abstract This chapter examines the range of forms of writings in verse designed to serve utilitarian or ‘practical’ needs. The variety of these forms demonstrates the diverse purposes for which such kinds of writings were employed. These purposes include the composition of charms, as well of poems on travel writing, on alchemy, on aspects of science and medicine, on gardening and arboriculture, in addition to larger verse compilations of more encyclopaedic kinds. This chapter also explores the extent to which the composition of verse compositions on these topics stands in contrast to the usually far more widely circulating fifteenth-century prose treatments of them.
