Migrants' housing navigation and living experiences are dependent on a variety of factors, including but not limited to legislative and social support for early / permanent settlement, the availability of affordable housing, employment prospects, and their individual circumstances. Low-to-median income migrants often face substantial difficulties in securing private accommodation due to the rising rental prices and eligibility criteria barriers. In this context, an increasing number of migrants are living in shared housing with non-related tenants to share rental and utility costs and receive social support. However, little is known about how and to what extent shared housing provides migrants freedom of home to perform everyday practices and how these tenants engage in the process of homemaking in these non-family households. This chapter answers these important research questions by drawing on an extended literature review and a case study of migrants' experiences of living in shared room housing in Sydney, Australia.
