Authenticity has been used as a means to encourage individuals to better understand and conceptualize the ways in which they understand who they are. Authenticity involves actively attending to and managing external perceptions and expectations while navigating one’s own identity. Significant complexity and tension exist within the standards of how authenticity is judged for Indigenous and Native peoples. For Native and Indigenous communities colonized by the United States, specifically Native Americans, American Indians, Native Alaskans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders, questions of authenticity have not only applied to the concept of self but also included justification of nativeness based on definitions and policies created by the US government. Indigenous people have their own ways of experiencing, navigating, and relating to the world, the universe, and each other.
