Why does the vast majority of healthcare research come from the Global North and why is it dominated by European and North American institutions? Why is Knowledge from the West considered superior to knowledge from other countries? Why are low-cost healthcare solutions from low-income countries generally unnoticed? This chapter describes the ambition of this book, which is to see how to minimize the chance of snap judgements about innovations from low-income countries so that we can achieve a more equitable flow of innovation globally. It provides an introduction to frugal innovation, coloniality, textual analysis, universalism, and the Matthew Effect – all of which are threading throughout subsequent chapters.
