Among some Indigenous peoples, the Seventh Generation philosophy refers to the idea that our present actions affect future generations of the earth and its inhabitants (Hill, n.d.). Accordingly, it is important to move through the world with the next seven generations in mind. As Indigenous scholars, we consider the implications that Seventh Generation “thinking” has for the future of developmental science. Specifically, we imagine the potential that an Indigenous strengths-based approach to developmental science has to promote the healing, growth, and flourishing of Indigenous futures. Towards this end, we offer a conceptualization of what an Indigenous strengths-based developmental science entails, which we adapted from recent research on Indigenous strengths-based approaches (O’Keefe et al., 2023). Overall, an Indigenous strengths-based approach to developmental science withstands coloniality, honors relationships, transforms Indigenous futures, promotes intergenerational healing, incorporates original instructions, and centers Indigenous cultures. We define each component and discuss research that exemplifies a strengths-based approach to conducting research that promotes positive developmental outcomes among Indigenous peoples. Finally, we conclude with the implications that adopting an Indigenous strengths-based approach has for the next seven generations of Indigenous peoples, urging developmental science to commit to co-creating healthy futures with Indigenous communities.
