The history of Fetzer Vineyards begins almost 40 years ago when Barney Fetzer purchased land in the North Coast region of California to grow grapes for the home winemaking market. In the 1950s, Fetzer was in the lumber business, not wine production. The second generation of Fetzer wine producers were successful in the management of the company as it grew from 200,000 cases of wine produced annually in 1981 to 2.2 million cases by 1995. The North Coast region of California has a climate that makes organic farming functional and economical. By the 1990s, the Fetzer family had decided to move away from the wine production business, and in 1992 sold the winery operations to Brown-Forman, a company from Louisville, KY. Brown-Forman purchased the Fetzer and Bel Arbor brand names, the Hopland winery that included 360 acres of vineyards, and the Fetzer Food and Wine Center. Grape varieties also have been selected to control some pests, particularly phylloxera.
