Abstract Why should music teachers care for music education? Or, more fundamentally, why should music teachers care about caring for music education? This chapter examines how care ethics can frame potentials for our students, their worlds, and their communities through, fundamentally, a better understanding of ourselves as music educators. Additionally, this chapter argues that music education—holistically conceived—is an ethical engagement with/for communities of people. Thus relatedly, explanations of why and how music making, creating, listening, and sharing contribute to many kinds of identity formation—including musical, personal, social, cultural, gendered, and ethical identity development—should be framed from a “care”—caring, care-filled, and careful—perspective.
