This chapter explores the limited research base about Black multilingual learners (BMLs) in dual language education settings and then uses existing research about diverse populations of BMLs to discern patterns that impact this group across settings, patterns such as anti-Blackness, White mainstream English hegemony or linguistic erasure. We then call for a critical multidimensional pedagogy that thoughtfully studies the unique and intersectional needs of this group to advance our understandings of how to create supportive and effective dual language instructional approaches that meet the unique needs of BMLs, to best support their academic achievement and identity development.
