This chapter discusses how organizations learn, drawing on organizational learning undertaken by individuals, by groups, and by organizations as a whole. It explains what organizational learning might mean and contrasts different theories of learning in order to understand some aspects of how the topic has been discussed in the research literature. It also recounts the concepts of organizational learning and the learning organization prevalent in the 1990s. The chapter defines organizational learning as learning undertaken or achieved by individuals within organizations, which is quite similar to individual learning. It also details how organizations learn when the knowledge that their members have is explicitly known and codified by the organization.
