Recent opinions of the Life of Cyril Phileotes have been rather mixed. Sargologos in his edition pays tribute to the text’s clarity, naturalness, precision of style, and proclaims its author, hosios Nicholas Kataskepenos, as "parmi les meilleurs hagiographes de Byzance". Cyril though was rather short on coenobitic experience, offering instead his withdrawal within the family home and his life in the navy, and he does not appear to have lived with his spiritual father. And he is quite atypical in his geographical location, so that imperial episodes which occur occasionally in most lives were more everyday happenings with Cyril. There is also some similarity in the working methods of the compilers. There is tremendous joy in the language of these exchanges, often very demotic, sometimes flourishing false etymologies and wordplay. There is care also with the stage-directions, for Nicholas is careful to record bodylanguage, particularly when dignitaries of the state meet the holy man in the court of his cell.
