Abstract Chaucer’s House of Fame is the first known work in English to mention and appropriate Dante, and the seriousness with which it does so has, over the last ten years or so, been subject to varying degrees of emphasis. One critic finds the poem taking from the Commedia ‘nothing less than an assurance that the “art poetical” was its own justification’; another sees Chaucer here recognizing ‘full well his limitations as a poet because he has grasped what Dante is doing with his poetry and his “art poetical’”; whilst another more cautiously concedes that the two poets do ‘have several interests in common and that Chaucer does [in The House of Fame] sustain an ironic counterpoint to Dante’s poem’.
