Abstract Occupational pension schemes (also known as retirement benefit schemes) are pension schemes that are organized or sponsored by the companies or organizations for which people work. The pensions offered by such schemes are generally related to employees’ earnings or salaries at or near retirement and to their service history; such pensions are known as defined benefit (DB) or salary-related or final-salary pensions, since the pension is typically based on some measure of final salary.
