Abstract In a letter of July 1638 Descartes referred to the hypotheses that he presented in the Dioptrics and Meteors, and invited a critic, Jean Baptiste Morin, to compare these with would-be explanations put forward by other people: Compare all their real qualities, their substantial forms, their elements and their other countless hypotheses with my single hypothesis that all bodies are composed of parts . . Compare the deductions I have made from my hypothesis-about \’ision, salt, winds, clouds, snow, thunder, the rainbow, and so on-with what others have derived from their hypotheses on the same topics! (AT ii. 196).
