Abstract In Ireland, as elsewhere in the developed world, national and municipal governments have adopted entrepreneurial practices such as place promotion, flagship projects, image boosterism, and urban regeneration schemes in order to promote competitive advantage on the international and global stage (Bartley and Saris 1999; Hall and Hubbard 1998). These practices are associated with new economic and social policies that coincide with a transformation of urban politics. An increasing stress is placed on facilitating market operations, through a new business-oriented management ethos within local and central government.
