Abstract Several recent publications have focused on the role of music in young people’s lives (e.g. Larson, 1995; Zillmann and Gan, 1997; North and Hargreaves, 1999; North et al., 2000; Welch, 2001). A prevalent theme throughout this research is the distinction between musical behaviour which takes place in formal (in school) and informal (out of school) contexts. Whilst this distinction is unproblematic at primary level (see Mills, 1997; Lamont, Chapter 3, this volume), at secondary level it becomes especially prominent as adolescents begin to devalue school-organized music, and instead begin to favour musical activities that they can organize themselves (Boal-Palheiros and Hargreaves, 2001).
