Abstract Economic evaluations of health care interventions are increasingly common, with the growth of the economic evaluation literature now widely documented (Pritchard 1998; Briggs and Gray 1999; Stone et al.2000). Uncertainty in economic evaluation is pervasive, entering the evaluative process at every stage. It is useful to distinguish uncertainty related to the data requirements of a study (the resource use and health outcome consequences of a particular intervention and the data required to value those consequences) from uncertainty related to the process of evaluation.
