Abstract

Abstract This essay was first published in New Looks at Italian Opera: Essays in Honor of Donald]. Grout (Ithaca, NY: Cornell University Press, 1968), 9-38. It is a reworking of a paper read at a meeting of the Greater New York Chapter of the American Musicological Society at the New York Public Library on 28 April 1962. The research in Florence in 1960–1 on which this essay was based was made possible by a fellowship from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation.
