Abstract There are many studies on Greek burial practices, but little on the transformation process after death described here by Sally Humphreys. We might add to her list of transformations, but we would have to agree that the various possibilities not only may be difficult to sort out, but may in fact function together. This essay examines a variant of one model - whereby society reincorporates the dead as ancestors - for Iron Age and early archaic Greece.
