Abstract Like physicians, apothecaries were often involved in sixteenth-century natural history. Yet it is not so easy to find information about what they actually contributed to this field of expertise and how they did this, except in a very fragmented way, at the individual, local, or at most regional level. The literature concerning European apothecaries in the sixteenth century is largely concerned with the study of materia medica, the production and translation of pharmacopoeia and with various aspects of professionalization, such as the creation of guilds, the development of professional standards, and the conflicts between physicians and apothecaries connected with attempts to demarcate their respective professional territories.
