Two studies related to plagiarized written communication in the classroom are reported. Three important findings emerged. First, most of the students sampled have plagiarized written work for college classes. Moreover, the frequency of their plagiarism makes it likely that some plagiarism occurs on nearly every written assignment where dishonesty is possible. Second, most of the sn1dents sampled have negative attitudes toward plagiarism and rationalize their counterattitudinal behaviors using social comparisons. Third, these data discount the notion that plagiarism is inadvertent or the result of confusion.
