The world of work is changing due to important active forces: the transition towards environmental sustainability and the evolution of digital technology. 1 These changes have led to processes of reorganisation of economic and social relations, with profound repercussions on the competitiveness of industrial systems, work organisation and employment quality (Rugiero, 2019).Digitalisation and technological changes, and their combination with social and environmental issues, are major challenges for industrial relations and social dialogue in each individual productive sector. In particular, the construction sector has undergone profound changes in recent years that have affected the organisation of its labour market, its associated value chains, and product and process innovation. In this regard the construction industry represents a paradigmatic case for understanding the potential benefits and critical aspects of innovation in favour of ecological transition and digitalisation which, along with social inclusion, are also pillars of the National Recovery and Resilience Plans aimed at mitigating the effects of the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. This book presents the results of DISCUS, the Digital Transformation in the Construction Sector: Challenges and Opportunities project, a European Union co-funded research project (DG Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion, VS/2019/0078). 2 The aim of the DISCUS research was to analyse and strengthen the role and contribution of innovative industrial relations systems, including social dialogue, in responding to the major challenges and opportunities delivered by digitalisation and technological changes in the construction sector.
