Aging-friendly communities could encourage and provide opportunities for older adults to volunteer to the extent they are able. Ideally, planned community activities and community meeting spaces could serve to forge cross-generational bonds. The first age is a phase of life during which individuals prepare for the activities of maturity, namely, employment and child-rearing. In the second age, individuals devote themselves almost exclusively to those activities. The third age occurs between retirement from the paid workforce and the start of age-imposed limitations. The fourth age is the phase of advanced old age marked by the 80 th birthday onward. It overlaps with the late old-old and oldest-old age categories. The ability to accommodate the self-concept and adjust future goals is consistent with subjective feelings of well-being that are a key element in positive aging. The use of technology is increasing among older adults, especially those who are affluent and have a high level of education.
