The author came to this chapter with the apparently straightforward intention of simply telling the story of the development of counselling psychology as he saw it, drawing on an overview of events and pre-existing accounts and only incidentally on his experience as a participant in some of the processes. Despite his marked distaste for hero worship and hagiography, the author do not doubt that Carl Rogers is one of the great figures of 20th century psychology and it happens that his personal biography well illustrates the notion that ideas in their discipline arise from an organic whole not a mechanistic ding-dong between competing elements. The birth date of counselling psychology within the profession of psychology in the UK is widely accepted as being in 1982 when the British Psychological Society agreed to establish a Counselling Psychology Section.
