This chapter explores some examples of the range of provision, the work of some arts organisations and the evidence about the impact of the arts and creative activities in criminal justice. Different arts organisations are likely to have different aims in working within the criminal justice system. There is considerable evidence that participation in the arts increases the confidence and social skills of those in contact with the criminal justice system. Recent research with young people in contact with the criminal justice system found that Youth Offending team staff were generally very conscious of the improved relationships brought about by participation in the creative arts and how this facilitated a better understanding of young people. There is a long and complex history of creative arts in the criminal justice system, and currently, there is a substantial arts and cultural life in the system that primarily sits outside of ‘traditional’ rehabilitation and education provision.
