This chapter provides a general overview of some of the theories and applications that inform the practice of art therapy. Art therapy emerged as a union of the theoretical underpinnings from the fields of psychology and art. The psychoanalytic theories of both Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung have deeply influenced the pioneers of the art therapy field. Developmental art therapy emphasizes the comprehensive understanding of the normative process of cognitive, emotional, physical, and artistic development of children and the precept that creative artistic activities offer normative experiences and promote increased social, emotional, and cognitive functioning for all individuals. Adaptive art therapy theory primarily seeks to provide normalizing experiences for children with varying disabilities. Cognitive-behavioral therapy draws from social learning, behavioral, cognitive, and social cognitive approaches. The process or approaches to art therapy are as varied as there are theories of applied psychotherapy.
