Although the population is aging, age discrimination exists and is a real barrier for people older than age 65 who attempt to access mental health care services. The term ageism was coined as a descriptive term for discrimination and stereotyping related to age, and like other forms of prejudice, it may both overtly and covertly influence individuals' perceptions and attitudes toward a specific population. This chapter presents experiential activities that have been developed to help clinicians gain greater sensitivity toward older clients and face their own mortality fears as they arise in the therapy room. These activities were conducted with a class of six therapy students in a university setting. All of the activities generated a high level of responsiveness. Progress will be measured by supervisees identifying specific biases they have had toward this demographic.
