Creative Experiential Learning (CEL) is an educational method that involves interactive, collaborative, multimodal learning through seeing, hearing, talking, and doing, which leads to a better retention and understanding of information. CEL has both personal and professional benefits for students in training programs related to the expressive art therapies. Instructor preparation for CEL entails developing several general pedagogical skills. The physical learning environment should include enough space so students can comfortably move around and interact with one another. Throughout the process, CEL instructors engage in informed consent, formative assessment, variation in methods and media, continual encouragement, and processing and debriefing. Although role-play is a common activity in classrooms, many students may feel awkward, especially when students playing the role of clients are not convincing. Closure activities provide a ritual ending that signals a time to prepare to transition to another environment.
