This essay explores the potential contributions of critical media studies to critical political science. It focuses on three theories related to media industries (Marxism, organizational studies, and pragmatism) and three theories related to media texts (cultural studies, feminism, and queer theory). Ott and Mack identify the role that media, as technologies of communication, play in creating our social environment, structuring human consciousness, and shaping our feelings and behaviors. They stress the ever-evolving character of media as a way of highlighting the ongoing importance of interrogating our media-laden landscape. By dismantling hegemonic media practices and institutions, and demythologizing the ideology of media texts, Ott and Mack show how the diverse, multidisciplinary tradition of critical media studies can point the way toward a more just and democratic vision of society.
