Abstract Qualitative research utilizing historical data is inextricably tied to the practice of archival research. This chapter introduces strategies for navigating archives that address analytical challenges that accompany the act of collecting records about the past and transforming them into evidence for qualitative analyses. It familiarizes researchers with key terminology and the organizational structure of archives that enable effective use of metarecords (such as a finding aid, index, and research guide). It also explains how researchers may locate, collect, and analyze records in ways that anticipate potential biases (such as source bias, survival bias, reinforcement bias, transfer bias, and digitization bias).
