The Rhinoceros in the Rock Art of Central India Neumayer (b.1949).My synthesis has benefited from the discussions and especially the illustrations of many examples in Neumayer (2011).The original drawings are usually painted with colours and are often in rock shelters in inaccessible hill areas. The study of their subject matter is facilitated by the tracings, which show the shape of animals like the rhinoceros clearly identifiable by the horn.A selection of tracings depicting rhinos is sufficient to show that this animal played a role, even if minor, in the lives of the people of the ancient civilisation responsible for the art work.Based on the illustrations and a limited review of the literature, it is here investigated how these depictions help us to understand the distribution of the rhino in previous ages, discussing their age (9.5), the localities (9.6), the specific identity of the rhinos (9.7), ending with conclusions concerning the animal's range (9.8).
