Cognitive psychology has undergone a paradigm shift in the understanding of how knowledge is acquired and represented. This shift represents a move away from brain-bound models of cognition towards embodied notions of thought, which hold that thinking occurs through mind–body–environment interactions grounded in sensory-motor processes (e.g., Barsalou 2008 ). A derivative of embodied cognition, embodied learning shifts the focus of teaching and learning from an exclusively mental effort toward an embodied, sensory-rich experience and offers new applications and strategies to maximize learning effectiveness.
